" New research finds emissions at the peak of the global shutdown fell by 17% but it is unrealistic for that to be maintained. "
The United in Science 2021 report, the third in a series, is coordinated by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), with input from the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the World Health Organization (WHO), the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the Global Carbon Project (GCP), the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) and the Met Office (UK). It presents the very latest scientific data and findings related to climate change to inform global policy and action.
"Rising temperatures mean more than just hotter days, ... they're expanding the reach of diseases like malaria, dengue, and Zika. Mosquitoes are finding new breeding grounds. Europe, previously unaffected, now faces more threats. The good news? The fight against these diseases is advancing. The first malaria vaccine has begun its rollout in Africa, and more vaccines against more climate-sensitive diseases are in development. As we make strides with the malaria vaccine and others, we're not just combating diseases-- we're helping adapt to our changing planet."
"Coronavirus Disease"(666) aka Covid(19) sparked lockdowns around the world, emissions of one of the greenhouse gases responsible for climate change, atmospheric carbon dioxide, plummeted. But is this record drop a short-term effect of the 2020 pandemic or a 'new normal'? BBC Weather's Ben Rich explores the impact of coronavirus on the global climate. "
" As the deadly COVID-19 pandemic brought the world to a standstill, greenhouse gas emissions plummeted by a record amount. Yet, in the grand scheme of climate change, this
historic reduction was but a blip with little impact on atmospheric carbon dioxide levels"
The experience this year clearly demonstrates that restraining economic activities, with its painful consequences, will not slow down CO2 build-up and global warming. Austerity cannot lead to a zero emissions economy. The green transition needs a new mode of production and consumption and post-crisis investments must accelerate economic transformation to ensure that we “recover better together”.
Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns, mainly caused by human activities, especially the burning of fossil fuels."
"Guterres warned 'the era of global warming has ended, the era of global boiling has arrived' after recent global temperatures shattered records. The steady rise in global average temperatures, driven by pollution that traps sunlight and acts like a greenhouse around the Earth, has made weather extremes worse. " -
"Faith-based organizations (FBOs) and religious leaders are an important presence at the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of Parties demonstrating that religious and spiritual communities are essential to the fight against climate change and to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the goals of the Paris Agreement.
UNEP, through the Faith for Earth Coalition, launched a robust COP28 preparation process in January 2023 under the mechanism of the Interfaith Coordination Group on Climate Change. Click here for a summary of our engagement."

" A group of leading Islamic scholars have issued a declaration calling on the world’s 1.6 billion Muslims to do their part to eliminate dangerous greenhouse gas emissions and turn toward renewable energy sources. The declaration urges world leaders meeting in Paris later this year to commit to a 100 percent zero-emissions strategy and to invest in decentralized renewable energy in order to reduce poverty and the catastrophic impacts of climate change. The declaration comes on the heels of the publication of Pope Francis’s encyclical on the environment earlier this year, which also calls for sweeping action on climate change."
The Faith for Earth initiative from UN Environment is uniting religions around the world to focus on environmental issues. At the environment assembly 135 faith leaders from 12 different religions came together to talk about using the influence of faith to better our natural environment.
“Every country in the world wants energy security, wants to create jobs and promote sustainable prosperity, and wants to encourage its young people to build skills and plan for the future. And these days, every country also wants to do this while reaching their climate goals – so their young people actually have a future worth planning for.” This case study examines the UAE’s goal to become a climate leader while encouraging their youth to study STEM subjects and driving gender empowerment – all via their investment in nuclear energy. "The U.N. climate summit is back in Africa after six years and four consecutive Europe-based conferences. COP27 will be held in the resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt and begins next week. It’s taking place in the shadow of the largest war in Europe in decades, which has sparked global food and energy crises and raised fears it could distract leaders from promises made last year in Glasgow."
